Happy New Year! We are looking forward to this new semester. The staff and students at Washington are putting forth maximum effort to meet the goals we set back in August. As we make this transition back into teaching and learning, we value your support. Did you make any resolutions for the New Year?
One of the best resolutions that you could make (and keep!) is to read to or with your child every single day. The research is quite clear and definitive that reading aloud with a child everyday is the single most important factor in determining the child’s success as a reader.
Part of our daily homework is reading at home. A child that reads to and with a parent is going to be much more likely to want to do that homework in order to have that special time with a parent.
The bonds that you create when you read together will be forever in your child’s memory and heart. Please continue to monitor that your child is not just completing homework, but really understanding it! You are your child’s first teacher!
Each grade level will hold a Parent Event during this second semester to give you the opportunity to help learn new ways to help your child at home.
We value our partnership with you. I hope that 2009 is a wonderful year for you and your family! Thank you for sharing your children with us at Washington!
September 2008
I am so happy to serve you and your children as your new principal. The students and staff have been terrific in helping me to get to know the school. I’m enjoying learning students’ names and getting to know them. Washington is a great school! The students and staff have worked so hard to meet the goal of Adequate Yearly Progress and last spring they did it!
The staff is prepared for another great year of learning and working hard to reach our goals. We have high expectations that your children will meet or exceed all of the standards at his/her grade level this year. We want your children to be successful. That includes teaching them to work hard and behave responsibly and respectfully.
We need YOU to partner with us! Children need to know that their parents think education is important, are interested in it day by day and will help them to do their best. One way to do that is to read newsletters for school information, skills students are learning and tips for helping your child. Another way is to ensure that your child completes homework every day.
STAY INFORMED! Then GET INVOLVED! Our Parent Community Resource specialist, Robin Cook can assist you in this effort. If I can ever be of assistance to you, please don’t hesitate to call on me. I welcome and expect your involvement in your child’s education.
